The character profiling session: how to reveal a student’s intellectual identity
Exploring the Select:ed IQ+EQ method: character profiling sessions
Day school admissions / Boarding school admissions / International school admissions ∙ London / Surrey / UK / UAE / Middle East
Traditional school admissions approaches evaluate children almost exclusively through a transactional lens: CAT4 scores, ISEB Pre-Tests, and timed writing tasks. While these metrics offer a snapshot of baseline cognitive processing, they fail to reveal a child’s true intellectual identity: what motivates them to learn, the ideal relational environment, where they are resilient or, conversely, where they might have mental/emotional blocks.
The character profiling session as the start of our education consultancy approach is explicitly designed to get away from standardised testing. (That bit is important and comes next…) The anchor throughout has to be your child’s character and interests.
Select:ed’s modern, empathetic framework draws together two strands: IQ + EQ in finding the right-fit school for your son or daughter. You could call it academic profile and character fit. Or the balance between classroom + sports pitch, rehearsal space or art studio.
Our primary aim is to help you plot a pathway for your child that leads to happiness and success. We pride ourselves on recommending the best schools which will cultivate your son or daughter’s talents, and, most importantly, are the right fit for them.
All our School Searches start with a character profiling session with expert teacher Adam D’Souza that is intended as an antidote to cookie-cutter admissions testing. This session works a little like a lesson, with the focus being critical thinking and coaching.
Three important principles behind this session are:
No right answers: ‘left field’ stimulus material that does not work towards a correct answer, but instead is designed to showcase how a child thinks.
No marks or scores: Eliminating performance pressure allows a child to move from defensive performance to genuine engagement, particularly for children used to academic achievement in high-powered schools
No scripted performance: We bypass rehearsed interview answers to surface authentic character, curiosity and relational preferences.
By creating a zero-stakes, high-curiosity environment, this session uncovers how a student processes new information, responds to ambiguity and imagines their own academic future.
IQ+EQ signals: what are we aiming to discover?
IQ signals – academic aptitude
How quickly does the child connect new, unfamiliar concepts? Do they possess deep specialist knowledge, or are they broad generalists?
Processing speed
Capacity for verbal and non-verbal inference
Domain-specific knowledge (particularly for older children)
Vocabulary and verbal articulation
EQ signals – emotional and social readiness
How does the child respond to feeling misunderstood? What type of environment/culture enables them to feel secure enough to take intellectual risks?
Need for autonomy vs structured guidance
Social energy (introversion/extraversion)
Personal values and moral framework
Perseverance when faced with unfamiliarity
Translating a character profile into matching your child with the right-fit schools
Filtering out “brand bias”: Sometimes families target a particular school on the basis of its prestige brand or reputation for academic excellence. Profiling proves when a high-profile school (e.g. a massive 2000-student campus at an international school in Dubai, for example) will cause a child with low crowd tolerance to retreat and disengage.
Matching pedagogical style: They say that culture eats strategy for breakfast. Likewise, when it comes to schools, thinking about the culture and approach to teaching is vital to finding the right-fit school for a child.
Long-term journey planning: The output from this session can form the baseline for the student’s 5-to-10-year educational roadmap, shaping subject choices, university preparation and personal development.

Frequently asked questions about our IQ+EQ Framework
-
Select:ed provides specialist, independent education consultancy for professional families moving between the UK <> Middle East regions. By assessing a student's true intellectual identity rather than relying on league tables, Select:ed matches students to the right-fit premium international schools where they will thrive academically and socially.

The Academic Profiler assessment, which forms part of the Select:ed IQ+EQ method developed by Adam D'Souza, is an age-standardised assessment of a child’s cognitive aptitude. This gives you a psychologically robust baseline for understanding your child’s academic strengths and weaknesses in comparison to thousands of children their exact age around the world.
Academic Profiler is not an entrance exam for a particular school. It is ‘curriculum agnostic’, in that this assessment measures your child’s academic capabilities rather than knowledge of a particular curriculum’s content.
-
Traditional school interviews can sometimes reward rehearsed, extroverted performance rather than intellectual depth. Children with deep specialist knowledge or quieter personalities can be misjudged as uncommunicative. Non-performative profiling sessions create space and time to uncover a child’s interests, motivation and relational style, using age-tailored visual and conceptual exercises to reveal a student's actual reasoning capabilities and leadership potential.
